Can your roof brave the elements?

While generally lovely Southern California weather, these days we’ve learned to expect the unexpected. Your roof needs to be fully intact and ready to withstand nature’s demands.

Once again, while not the most exciting topic, we want our customers to understand that a roof isn’t just any old part of your home or commercial building, they serve a vital function for keeping water, sun and pests out, while keeping cooling, dryness and safety in. Extreme sun, high winds, and torrential rains coupled with strong winds can make your roof take a beating.

What’s in a roof?

There are a variety of structures you need to think about when considering the humble roof. It’s a bit more complicated than you might imagine, and while each roof may have slight variations, there are some specific items that are part of, go through, attach to or go around most common Roofs: The Soffit, the Gutters, the Flashings, the Shingles and the Fascia. All of these must remain intact, watertight and functioning properly in order for your roof to do the job it is supposed to do – protect and defend your home against nature and the elements.

  • Keeping rodents and insects out is the eternal fight of home or commercial building. The last thing you need is to have them eat away, dig or nest in the mesh (the soffit) which you can find underneath the overhang, lining all around.
  • Keeping rainwater off the roof prevents leaks and eventual rotting of your roof. The gutters must remain free of debris, dirt and, unfortunately again, pests. Common aluminum gutters bend and crack if not regularly cared for.
  • Keeping the tight seal of the flashings (made of thin, watertight material to prevent water from getting in) between your roof and the bending and flexing structures that may go through the roof, like drain pipes or even the chimney is of utmost importance. Cracks and gaps can allow water to slowly work its way into the roof itself leading to rotting and water damage.
  • Keeping the fascia in good repair keeps the roof strong and the fascia is a visible structure on the outer surface. Damage can be unsightly, but can also lead to additional weakening and damage of the roof. The fascia is an architectural term. It describes a band that runs along under the roof edge but is actually horizontal.
  • Keeping your shingles in good repair is not just for esthetics. While shingles need to look nice and to compliment your home or building architecture, they serve the vital purpose of keeping water and elements out. But shingles can become cracked, chipped, get holes in them or even get whisked off by high winds.

1-800-Roofcare will maintain your roof so you don't have to

Whether a complete replacement or more minor damage, we want to be your “go to” roofing company. Prevention is the name of our game, and we have quarterly, bi-annual and yearly inspection and maintenance plans to suite any home, any commercial building and any budget.

Rest assured that we will only report what we find, but even small repairs may be covered by your insurance policy. Not all damage is immediate. It can often take years for water damage to end in roof rot as it slowly gets trapped under cracks and crevices, working its way into your roof.

If I need a replacement, how do I know what to choose?

We pride ourselves on being experts in all things roofs! We also pride ourselves in giving you counsel, advice and the best customer service, from the smallest inspection and repair to a full roof replacement. But for a full roof replacement, let’s look at some of the considerations you will have:

  • You’re the Customer, and Your Concerns are Unique to You! - Our experts will ask you lots of questions so we can make sure what you choose will satisfy both your unique needs and that of the house or building.
  • You Want the Best Investment Value. Not all roofing materials are alike, but with our expert knowledge and recommendations we will make sure you get high functionality, a roof that will last, and at the least possible cost.
  • You Want Your Home to Look Good! Roofing material varies, and the look of your home or commercial building is just as important to our customers as the reliability of the roofing material. We’ll make recommendations from the material choices on the market today, to keep your home looking its best.

Roof materials available

Materials for your roofing needs all have pros and cons. When considering roof replacement you may prefer materials that are “green,” yet that material may not be the best solution for the building. We’ll help you look at the available materials with a practical eye so you can be sure and comfortable with your decision. Materials to choose from include:

  • Asphalt Shingles
  • Slate
  • Tile
  • Wood Roofs
  • Metal Roofs
  • Polycarbonate
